ENG:

Durable, made from recycled yarn, beautiful. Finally, tights that are an ethically alternative and at a reasonable price: a journey that starts in Israel and ends in Sweden through Italy. An interview with the two girls behind Swedish Stockings, a wonderful brand that puts together contemporary style and old fashion common sense.

– Tell us about you, were you are from and which was your study/job path until now. Where you friend already?
Nadja: I studied journalism and worked at SVT, with documentary films and factual programmes. Linn had studies economics. We didn´t know each other from before. We met through mututal friends and started talking business right away.

– When I’ve read on your website stockings are so poisoning for our planet I was really surprised, how your idea was born?
Nadja: The idea came to us after viewing a documentary called “The light bulb conspiracy”. It was about the fact that products are purposely designed to age quickly in order to boost consumption in society. Pantyhose was brought up as a product that has gone from a top quality product that used to be repaired by tailors in the 1960s to becoming a common wear and tear clothing item. On top of that pantyhose is a petroleum product and the production is very harmful to the environment. Based on these facts we created Swedish Stockings in November 2013. We believe that sustainability can be achieved along with great design and quality.

-Did you had any help to start the businness? Who mostly believed in you?
Nadja: We took all help we could from friends and family. We mostly believed in ourselves and that’s the most important thing.

-How the Swedish Stockings production works?
Nadja: Swedish Stockings creates pantyhose out of recycled yarn from NILIT. The product is called Nilit ecocare yarn and it is produced in Israel by NILIT (you can read more about the yarn through this link). By melting down overflow of nylon from earlier production they recreate the nylon thread. This innovation is patented by NILIT and the process itself also means a big reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. Nilit then ships the recycled thread to our manufacturer in Italy called Calze Ileana. They are a zero-waste factory, their business is family owned and a bit smaller compared to other hosiery manufacturers. Ileana herself is very engaged in maintaining hight standards and a sustainable production. The water used during the coloring process is purified and flows back into the agricultural landscape. And a large part of their production is also driven by solar panels. The colors are obtained in their own strictly controlled laboratory. You can download all of Ileanas cerificates through this link.

-Did you join Fashion Revolution Day this year?
Nadja: We launched our Swedish Stockings recycling program and we spoke about the importance of sustainability within fashion at two big events in Stockholm. One hosted by H&M.

-Where you sell your products today?
Nadja: We have retailers all over the world and also sell through our webshop.

PS: This winter, send your old pantyhose to SwedishStockings and buy a few quality and ethical ones!
